Default G80 went out at 290k miles

Well the ole g80 finally gave up the ghost on the way home from Kennedale. I got my money's worth out of it I'd say. I still drives, but just jerks and bucks the whole truck pretty bad and makes some pretty bad noise.

At least you still have teeth on the spiders last one i saw stripped the teeth off of the spiders, it apparently happened in pretty short order too, guy was driving down the interstate, went to pass somebody and when the trans downshifted he thought his trans flared real bad, so he let off of it and heard a ratcheting grinding noise so he pulled over and shut truck off gave it a minute to cool off started it back up and put it in gear and all that happened was the engine revved and the speedometer jumped to about 50 and shifted..... Oooops!!! Ended up getting the guy a used rear axle assembly, still kick myself for not holding on to the old one....

That would be a disaster, I'm afraid if I keep driving it like this until I get a good posi it's gonna snap an axle or an output shaft on the trans. I baby it but still it makes me nervous. Could I just take the g80 out and run an open differential without having to set all the tolerances back up and everything?

As many chipped teeth as you have on the spiders, wouldnt really recommend driving it.... But at this point if you have to, its probably more likely you will end up shearing the spider teeth before you break anything....

I looked like the tin man after cutting it out for about 5 hours. Good news is that I got the tru-trac and 4.10's in and all set up about to go break them in! It's so much beefier looking than the g80
