Exclamation G80 Problems

I have a 2002 silvy with the posi (G80) in the rear end. i notice that when ever i go over speed bumbs quickly i hear a loud grinding noise for like a split second and then its gone. well i just took a camping trip and i was off roading on a dirt road (that was really loose) going about 10-15MPH and when i go over the bumps, my rearend started grinding so bad that the only way it will stop is if I stop the truck. this happened probably 20 or 30 times on the way down the mountain. i know that its not the tranny too. i had a buddy ride in the back and he said it was coming from the axle. this noise is extremely loud and embarassing so i dont think it can be over looked it is a major issue and i was just wondering if any of you guys had an idea whats messed up. ohh and i do notice that when i take a sharp corner it binds up and i can hear the inside tire chattering. i was just wondering if any of you have experienced this. or know what to do. i cannot tell you how embarassing it was to be basically crawling down a dirt road that i should have been goin 40 through. i even got under the truck to see if something was logged in the axel or anything and there was nothing.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

sorry for the novel

First thing I would check is the pinion nut at the yoke. If it backed off, the pinion gear could be making direct contact with the carrier and that makes a horrendous grinding noise (don't ask how I know since I did my own 4.10 install... ). If that checks out OK, then you'll just have to get that diff cover off and take a look see. HTH.

Cool

Sounds to me like the gear that is engaged and then turns to lock the diff up is worn out and ratcheting. I think you will have to open it up for an inspection. It may be time to start looking around for a replacement. Eaton limited slips and detroit truetrac are a couple of options but there are others. Remember a limited slip does not work exactly like a gov-lock or a detroit locker so take that into consideration according to how you use your truck.

Good luck with the diff.
