When the retaining clip breaks in the front diff, as it often does, does the ring and pinion get worn out also, or can you usually get away with just a new retainer, bearings, and seals?

Depends on how long you drive it like that. I rebuilt two this summer that didn't hum for very long and the gears looked good so i reused them. A few thousand miles later on both and they're still running quiet and smooth (one was from a denali so it works all the time).
I imagine if someone were to drive for 5-10k miles with them humming or making noises then the gears probably would be trashed by then.

Hey I just wanted to say thanks again, and that I'm still on the fence about if I want to just go the budget route and rebuild the front diff and throw a trutrac in the rear, or spend the extra dough on two sets of Yukon 4.10's for the front and rear. I just checked Ron's website, and the Yukon 4.10 front and rear gear package with master install kits is over $600...and since my friends here are telling me that the extra .37 isn't worth it, it may be in my best interest to stick with the 3.73's for now
I really want 4.10's though...sounds cooler than 3.73's
