Default Cant get top bolt out of shackle, HELP!!

Search is down for the moment and I need some help with the easy shackle install. I got under my truck, jacked it up on the differential, and I started to take the bottom bolt out of the OEM shackle when I stopped, I don't really know what I'm doing and I don't want the leaf to shoot up or anything.

So can you tell me where to jack the truck up at, what (if any) bolts to take out first, and how to re-install the new ones?

Thanks
Josh

So you DO jack it up on the differential until the wheels come off the ground? I thought that would keep tenstion on the leaf springs? I'm only changing the shackles so the front part of the leaf won't be taken off.

If you jacked the truck up by the diff, where the tires are off or almost off the ground, you have unloaded the leafs, so taking out the bolts wont make anything jump out or anything. You will probably have to jack the leaf up to get the top bolt out of the shackle, because if not it will hit the side of the frame.

So if I remember correctly, you jack up the diff to unload the leafs, take out lower bolt, then lower the jack while watching shackle (leaf) to bed clearance, so you can slide the top bolt out of the shackle, then reverse process for new shackle.

i think on the StepSides you have to loosen the bed

For the stepsides you don't have to loosen the bed. When I installed shackles on mine, I had to loosen the u-bolts that hold the axle to the leaf springs so I could pull the springs away from the frame/bed to get the bolts out. It was easy, but it took me a while to figure it out.

easiest way I've found, after putting jackstands under the axle, was to jack the frame up until the axle ever so slightly leaves the jackstand, then let it settle just a bit. How did I do this? with a floor jack and a piece of 4x4 wood turned top to bottom about a foot long. this will unweight the spring enough to change the bolts with no contact and will keep the spring from jumping about.

This is not the safest method, however, I had little choice due to the hieght of my 2500HD, you may be able to get away with a 4x4 spacer on its side.

yes, on stepside you must unbolt the spring from the axle, to move it over to remove the bolt..... there is no other way, unfortunatly.
