Ext. cab guys...2 piece DS question...
#11
anyone had any problems with the two piece driveshaft?
anyone done any upgrades in regards to the driveshaft on an ext. cab?
this comes up due to a couple of rear ds u-joint bolt heads that I noticed recently during my tranny removal...
a wrench or socket wouldn't fit and when I looked to see why, I noticed that one of the two bolt heads on each cap had evidently hit something...
they appeared to have hit something on itself while spinning under load...
this was where the u-joint attaches to the pinion yoke...
I'll see if I can get pics posted...

Your rear leaf springs are winding up under load and is putting the rear drive shaft & joint in a bind. You are getting ready to spit the drive shaft out. You will need some type of traction bar, ladder bar, pinion snubber, etc.
A good friend of mine had the same thing happen. Been there, seen it, done it.
Should be a fairly easy & inexpensive fix.

I thought that, but I can't imagine it binding that much...
also...I looked closer and the damage to the bolt heads looks old...
the pinion seal is leaking though and that yoke is slinging dope as well...
even though I haven't noticed any drips while parked...
I do have a set of CalTracs...just never installed them once the slicks cured my wheel hop and spinning...

That would be a LONG 1-piece, which I would think would be hard to balance and might be subject to vibrations more so than two shafts of half the length each. My bolt heads had the same issue, it was because my pinion angle as so bad (see pic) than under load the rear rotated up enough to cause binding in the u-joint. I fixed the pinion angle by moving the carrier bearing up several inches and with pinion angle shims and haven't had the problem since. But I would too be interested in a 1-piece if it's possible and safe.

I'm converting mine to 1 pc. aluminum now, weight savings and much easier to get the driveline angles correct w/ drop and 4l80e swap. Plus I'll get stout Spicer XL u-joints as compared to the crap greasable u joints in there now popping and shitting on themselves.
The only downside is undercarriage clearance and cost. I'm going to try and go with a 4" shaft, but I may need to go to 5" due to the length.

The shop I use from time to time was built a TT Dodge SRT10 that makes about 1300hp. They removed the 2pc DS on it and just had a local DS shop make a 1pc steel DS for it that seems to work fine.

TimZ on here actually has a 1 pc. steel driveshaft in his ECSB that he had made and it does well for him. I know Denny's wont make a steel 1 pc that long. I may ask DSS if they'll make a 1 pc. steel shaft but I doubt it due to the length.
