engine swap

You could upgrade to a 350 or 383 would be the cheapest with new from the factory motors. Or you could call world products and get a 454 SBC.
Any of which would require a TB upgrade, fuel system upgrade, exhaust upgrade, and custom programming to get the most out of.
A LS based motor also works wonders, but is not a true bolt in. Plenty of people have done them with painless wiring kits or just re-wired the harness and computer themselves.
If you want the most flexability with computer controls the LS swap with its excellent computer is the way to go.

I'd just go ahead and swap in a 6.0L now. It will keep you up to date in the world of GM performance.
Unfortunately I cannot find the website, but I have come across a site in the past completely detailing a 6.0L swap into an 98 (I think) OBS that had a 5.7 SBC.
