Default Eaton v G80

I have a 99 Z-71 and the rear end is going. I posted on here awhile back to get some suggestions and most said go with the Eaton LSD. According to numerous websites it says Eaton's replacement is the G80. Is this just a similar name or does GM install eaton rearends in their stock setups?

I believe the G80 is made by Eaton, but the Eaton LSD and the G80 are NOT the same. The Eaton LSD is much stronger

G80 is the RPO code for an Eaton locking differential that comes stock (or as an option) in many GM trucks. It is a fairly delicate piece and prone to failure once you start adding power or stress. The Eaton LSD (also called a 'posi') is not a locker, but a limited-slip differential that is clutch-based, rebuildable, and very strong. It is usually not found in stock applications, but you sure are happy when you find out it comes stock in your new 2006 Trailblazer SS.

The G80 "locking differential" uses centrifugal flyweights and mechanisms that respond to RPM delta between left and right. It senses slip and responds, that means traction has already been lost by the time it starts to work.

The Eaton Posi uses a mechanism that responds to input torque. The more torque going through it the tighter it gets. It actually prevents traction loss. Not only is it built stronger, but just the way it works make it able to handle more torque because it never has to overcome slippage already happening.

G80's on the street have been described as "having a mind of their own." The Eaton Posi is not like that, it's very predictable and just WORKS.

So to summarize, G80 = junk.

Eaton and others = good.

you are absolutlly correct saying that the g80 has a mind of its own.

I put an Eaton in my old 89 after I grenaded the open diff and it was God. I loved it. I knew everything that truck was gonna do when I was mobbin' and drifting and crap.

When I got my 99 I was like whoa! wtf is going on here! lol

Thank you for the replies. You guys are more than helpful. A couple more questions. What is a good price for a new Eaton LSD and where can I get one?

Randy's Ring and Pinion linky and you should expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $350. I think I got mine for $325 through the shop that installed it.

G80 is a lame excuse for a differential. I wouldnt use one in a golf cart! Go with an Eaton LSD or Detroit TrueTrac.
