Default Dumb question - What is a "servo"

Hi guys, this might be a stupid question but i hear alot of talk about people installing shift kits and servos. Well, the shiftkit i understand but i have no idea what a servo is. Could someone tell me what it is, how it works and what kind of benifits it has.

THANKS

Korey

It's a strange name for the "apply piston" used to actuate the band. There are two in the 4L60-E, one for second gear, one for fourth but they both actuate the same band. You will find that with transmissions people have all sorts of strange names for the parts. For example, many here call a torque converter "a stall".
