Driving in Front WD with broken rear end?
#1
Can this be done? I have a 97 Tahoe and stripped out my rear end and was wondering if it would be to hard on the transfer case if I put it in 4 Wheel High and drove it around like that. It broke the head off the pinion. I am about the pull the diff out on monday so I can get the head out so the rear end can spin over freely...if I can drive it in fwd that is. I was also wondering if I could buy the exact same gear ratio I have now could I install the a ring and pinion myself at home with out knowing much about setting up rear ends? I am assuming I would have to take it somewhere to get some one to press in the pinion bearing cause I am pretty sure it is messed up to. I think it is what caused the rear end to go out.
Also how do I find out what gears I have in the truck now? They might not be stock so I cant go buy the build sheet. I say that because the truck has 33s on it now and he might have changed them. Thanks

My buddy did that on his K5 blazer with a 16" lift and 44's so im guessing you will be fine to do it on 33's. His was perfectly fine and im sure he had much more strain on his due to the extra rubber and weight. I wouldnt suggest doing is for a long time though. Im sure its not the best for it but if its a must, yes it will work to get where you need to go.
