Both. The silicone just to hold the gasket in place for cover.

just had my cover off and found spiders gears about to be wiped out.cleaned the old gasket off the rear and cover.applied black rtv. let set for 10 minutes or until it didnt stick to my finger.installed the cover.no leaks.if i use both its only enough to hold the gasket in place. now im waiting on the mail man to deliver the truetrac, then i get to tear it apart one last time. (i hope)

like the last gent said. dont use silicone on the trans cover. or the engine oil pan. if you happen to use to much in a given area and it comes off inside it can plug the filter for the pump. then its dooms day for the rest of the componants.

Factory gasket with hi-tack spray sealant just to hold in place. Torque to spec and you are all good.

I've always used a bead of silicone on rear diff covers. Some vehicles come factory with silicone. Dodge has some good silicone that turns pretty hard.

I've always just cleaned and used paper gaskets, and I've never had an issue. I guess it's just personal preference, but the main thing is making sure you have good clean sealing surfaces.
