Do I really need a 4l80e?

I'm around 500 on motor before the nitrous. I still have 3.73's with an 80e and 3k stall. It is quite a bit harder to brake em loose going from the 60e. I have a set of 4.30's I need to install.

if you buy it new from FLT, your looking near the $6k mark. there's no point in building a 60e if you don't put every part into it IMO

I would never put an 80 for what you're describing.

I totally agree... ive put 643hp through a built 60e and ran 11s on a stock 60e before i lost 3/4 clutches.. I personally HATE an 80e gearing and the power it saps.. Yes it stronger but most dont need it!! I hear all the time... "I killed my 60e when my truck was stock!" Well...if you are tearing up trannys on stock or mild setups then look in the mirror.. you FOUND the problem.

Who cares why it failed, the 60Es are WEAK POS transmissions. The 80E only saps slightly more power than a 60E and once rolling I never noticed a difference in mine. The engine LOVES staying higher in the powerband on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts with the 4L80E. Gear ratios in the 80E can be changed far more cheaply than a $6,000 "BUILT" 4L60E and you get a MUCH STRONGER transmission out of the upgrade. Not to mention the clutch to clutch shifting is much more aggressive feeling than the band in the 4L60E could be.

Stock 350 in a non aggressively driven application killed a 4L60E in 38K miles.

yeah you right...had a 9 sec F body on a 60e... a 10 sec F body on a 60e... and a full weight RCSB in 11s on a stock 60e... POS indeed! Its my opinion man, and ive had Tons of success on a 60e and not EVEN CLOSE TO 6k...not too mention the MANY MANY TBSS guys running quick times on a 4l70e transmissions. Point im trying to make is you can TEAR UP ANYTHING if you drive it like crap and beat it..

I have an 80e in my Silverado and Camaro...and multiple 60e transmissions in past projects. I can definitely say that I prefer the driving characteristics of the 60e. it's just so soggy down low with an 80e. is it stronger? no doubt. is it necessary? not most times IMO. personal preferences I guess.
