Default Do do you measure for conveter spacing

Just like the title say. How do you do it??

I just installed a 6L90 converter from a ZL1 in my 6L80 while I had the motor out. I'm getting a very faint grinding while sitting at a light. When I installed it I measured the old converter and it sat back 15/16" from the front of the bell housing. When I slide the new converter in. It slide right back to that measurement.

Did I do it correct or did I mess something up bad?????

you need to measure the spacing between the converter pads and the flexplate.
You chould have 1/8-3/16 clearance.
Using a drill bit shank is an easy way to measure...if it fits, you have clearance...if not, you don't

if you have less than 1/8 the thing will eat the pump

if you have more than 3/16 you're liable for the converter to have poor pump rotor engagement and break the rotor

Looks like I’ll park and check it. I hope I didn’t mess anything up.

I've seen the flexplate have minimal contact with the starter after flexplate swaps...I'd check that too. Can sound really nasty when all it needs is a starter shim.

Yea real short rebuild. I almost have 900 miles on it. Pulled a 20 foot car trailer with RZR XP4 around last weekend for about 150 of those miles and didn’t skip a beat.

But now while coasting to a stop you can here it grinding and if you shift it in N without hitting the brakes it will stop making the noise before the truck stops moving.

I would think you would hear that on startup no?

What Moon Monster said. How did you get a 6L90e from a (Camaro?) ZL1? The 90e just came on the HD 8 lug trucks...

Maybe. That noise can often come and go if its the flexplate and the bendix making contact. Things move under load, and a worn starter doesn't always pull the bendix all the way back. Low hanging fruit if that's what the issue is...worth a look.
