Difference in rear ends?

Hello,
I have a 2002 Silverado with the 4.8L. It has the stock 8.6 rear end with 3.42 gears and disc brakes. From what I hear all of the 99-06 differentials with disc brakes and 6 lugs are the same. Is this true? I have found that I can get a used rear axle for ~150 and am thinking about just swapping in one with a 3.73 or 4.10 with a G80 from the junk yard...

Why are you going to swap the whole rear out? There is a guy on here selling a set of 4.10 gears. Are you 2WD or 4WD?

The Differential is the same.. but in 2000 they changed up the bearings.
Id skip on the G80, get a good LSD and it will be money well spent.
G80 disintegrate and it could trash your gears and transmission.

I'm 2wd... I'm just looking for a easy quick way to get some extra pulling power. I swapped to some larger tires and the truck is a bit sluggish now...
I'm not afraid of going into the rear (though it would be my first time) but at the moment I can't have the truck down for more than a weekend and I don't have a way to press off/on the pinion bearing. Is there an easy way to press on and off the bearings in the rear at home?? (I have gear pullers, would this work?)

As far as pressing bearings off and on with out a press. Use a gear puller and a bearing seperator. Might have to get some bolts that are long enough reach when pulling the bearing off. Heard it usually works in a pinch to get the job done.

I'm really leaning toward the 4.10's... Most everyone says they regret going only to 3.73's. I'm only worried that my gas mileage would be in the toilet (~32" tires) and that I would wear out parts prematurely.
Also, I have not changed anything in the PCM... I do realize this is also contributing to some of my performance loss...

4.10s and dont look back. 32" tires are huge with 3.42s. And with a 4.8L, I can only imagine how pitiful that is.
The way that many here go, including myself, is AAM 4.10 gears and a detroit tru trac from Ron @ Ron's Machining Service on ebay.
