OK....seeing as how GM used shallow and deep pans on the 4L60E (p/n 24229658 deep...used on trucks and P/N 8667545 used on everything else, S-10 came with both styles) Also they increased the depth of the 4L80E pan in 97 to 2.9" from 2.6"..I'd say a deeper pan is a good idea.

Quote: So then the intelligent response would have been:

Some times in race applications the added fluid and the finned aluminum pan provides enough cooling to not run a trans cooler at all.

Do you have any pictures of a set up like this? A majority of race cars I have ever seen have a cooler with a fan.

So all of your useless trash talking posts only showes you aren't here to help but be a jerk because you foolishly think I am an idiot.
Fans are a method of cooling.
Pans are a method of cooling.

Fins means more surface area for cooling and they also extract heat away from the fluid.

Speaking of deep pans. Do you have to run an extension to the filter or do you buy a different filter?

I am not a trans expert by any means, but FWIW I was told by THE Allison guru not to waste my money on a deep pan when I had my trans built.

Glad to see some intelligence showing up in this thread! It is nice when people reply with some decency and answer the question. Much more useful to all of us then the jerks who see my name on the thread and instantly walk in and poop in the reply box.

A pan will do very little for cooling the fluid, especially at a stand still. Added capacity will add a bit of resistance to heating up simply because you have more fluid to heat up to any given temperature. The capacity also gives a tiny bit more time before it is re-heated by going through the trans but we are talking 16% more fluid if you add 2 quarts and 25" if you are adding 3 quarts so it isn't much.

Your opinion may differ but from the facts that I can find they are as useful as a tornado. If the cost of the pan makes you feel more comfortable, that is it's value.
