Default Death of the Tranny. Got a few ?'s

After a short battle with slippage my transmission is all but gone. It doesnt shift into second until about 40mph and it's only getting worse.

My ? are what are my options. In my situation what would you do. I will have to get a personal loan to pay for it since i don't have the money and it would take me awhile to save that much up and i can't be without a vehicle I don't need anything high performance or anything i just need it to work and be reliable.

For those of you in Houston who did your work and how much. I'm tempted to just get one out a junkyard and to the install myself. The only thing that i don't like is i have no clue how many miles they have. The first thing that goes when they pull those cars in is the cluster. One junkyard said they charge $600 which doesn't seem to bad.

Btw my truck is an 02 with 66,XXX

Your almost stock and your tranny went out? What was your mileage? My stock tranny was fine when I took it out at 75,000 miles after spraying it for over a year. My built 65e only lasted 6 months and it is slipping as we speak so go figure. If you plan on modding up in the future, you will need a good transmission, I have heard good things about JAG and FLP. They are expensive but you get what you pay for...pay now or pay later. If your just gonna stay stock and putt around for a while than get one from a junk yard, and I would have them put it in and get some kind of warranty.

Don't know if you have a Cottman's down there or not but they quoted me a stock rebuilt carry out for $750. Good price considering you get a warantee.

Alright i'm looking into getting a used tranny from some where. Probably will end up getting it from a junkyard. I was wondering if somebody could tell what years and what tranny's will work. If i go to a junkyard and it's already been pulled from the truck is there any way to figure anything out about the tranny while i'm there. I'm hoping to find a vehicle they just got to gure out the milage but that chance is slim.

So the main ? is what gm trucks/suv and years should i look for?

Thanks for any info

Call James Lovelady here in Houston. You can get his number off of www.dragstripaction.com . He will build you a good tranny cheaper than a junk yard unit would be.

Good luck!
