ahahah yeah you can, get a shop light, (put it under the rear diff) or a flash light, hang yourself upside down, on the drivers seat, and use your foot to hit the shifter, (be sure that the parking break is on). Yes it works, lean over, push it over, watch it move.

yeah that's supposed to move, about an inch and a little more if you're trying to shove it. Any more, and it'd be like you're missing a rear tire, or as if it's getting ready to fall off.

you have one on the trans side . . . kinda have one in the middle, there's some other terminology for it.

the one in the middle has the fitting, past the carrier bearing, the one that moves up and down, their splines that you're greasing. If you've never done it before, it'll take a while. Pump it at least 10 times, you'll see a little bushing that's metal on one end, and has a rubber bushing on the inner side. It's going to flex back and forth as it fills with grease. It'll shoot out between the two yokes when it's "full." You can't over grease it, the excess comes out

so i dont want to grease the shaft coming from the transmission then. im not sure if greasing the yoke behind the carrier bearing is guna do the trick. i had it greased only a few months ago.

true, I was trying to make sure that you had been doing that, if you hadn't in 60K hard miles, then that would have been something.

I'd start looking at the rear for the clunking.
