Exclamation Can a 2wd 4l65e be converted to a 4wd trans??

My buddy has 01 silverado z71 and his trans went out and he can get a good 2wd 65e out of a 06 for half the price the trans guy is charging to rebuild his original..... He wants to know if its posible to use the 2wd drive and convert to 4wd...... What all is involved can he do it or does the trans have to be tore down???

Thanks guys.

The output shafts are different so it basically has to be torn down

Yep, guts have to come out to get to the snap ring that holds the shaft in. It's not a bad job, I've done it a few times, but pretty intimidating for someone whos never opened up a tranny.

ok so it would have to be taken in to a trans shop.... So something a trans shop should whip up pretty cheap and quick?

If there not crooks. I called a couple and they wanted to charge me $1-200 and a gasket/seal kit to do what took me 20-30 minutes to do myself. the only gaskets that "could" have been replaced were the pump gasket and the pan gasket, I just reused them on mine.

I swapped out the output shaft in my 4l60e from a 2001 camaro to fit my 4wd ram.

Like everyone else is saying, its not hard, just have to know what your doing.

Gasket and seal kits are cheap, shouldn't need nothing more then that. If a shop would do it for $120, it wouldn't be a bad deal.
