Default before i spend money need advice

found a 03 80e im thinking about getting no apparent info on it besides no gears. i havent looked at it yet. on behalf i was told no gears. but now im really wondering it it would be a good buy only if its not broken past the point i have to spend 2k to fix it, the trans has not been torn apart so its a mystery right now. can anyone tell me what to look for. im not tearing into it just taking pan off. and minor things to see. and for 100 bucks i really wont be in a hole.. considering buying a so called pefecting shifting trans for 700+ and once install somethings broken..

For 100 the tranny shop would probably buy the core off of you for parts if the case is wadded up...My $200 trans had a bad planetary and it still only cost 600 to replace that and have a quicky rebuild done to it.

No gears might just be. The pump. But I would get it and open it up and see if its has any broken parts or teeth broken off the shells....if you have some tools (good tools) you can pop the pump with no special tools. If you take the pan off and take the solinoids out up front near the pump and the unbolt the pump and make sure you take the little rubber o-ring off the input shaft and the pump should pop off
