Axle housing interchangeability ?

Would anyone happen to know if the axle housing alone from a 2003 Silverado 1/2 ton w/rear disc could be swapped for a 2005 Silverado 1/2 ton w/rear drum brakes. I'm only talking about the housing not the brakes. Thanks for any help.

I suppose you could. You would need to cut it and tig it back into place.

I don’t know why it wouldn’t work.

But it may be easier to just swap the whole thing.

What part would have to be welded?

A complete swap would be easier for sure, not 100% if they’re compatibly. Check part numbers on each and compare.

I swapped a 14 bolt from a 2005 SS 1500 into my 2001 with no issues what so ever. Everything bolted right up, even removed the drums from the 2005 diff and replaced them with my factory disc brakes. I don`t think you will have any problems.
