AWD axel vs 4x4 Axel

AWD axel vs 4x4 Axel
When I pop my truck into 4x4, does anything happen to my axel/hub etc?
How does a front axel work on say an SS or denali?
I'm trying to conclusively figure out if I can go to AWD. Can I just pop in and out of FWD to lock up the front axel/hubs with an AWD t-case?
