Asking for your knowledge on tires!
#1
Hello,
I was hoping maybe someone knows what's the widest tire I can mount on an OEM Chevy Silverado SS wheel? The original tire is a 275/55/20, but until I ran into another forum that mention can mount a 285 or even 295 but to be honest, can I really trust what they say? So I ask here which hopefully maybe one of you guys have actually put a wider tire on the same wheel. Also if it helps for any of your recommendations I'm sitting on a 4/7 drop. And if you know any good tire brands for tires like these let me know! Also if you have any questions for me just ask!
Thank You guys!!!

Well, there is the widest tire you CAN put on a rim and there is the widest tire you SHOULD put on a rim. Although if may physically fit, putting a tire on a rim narrower than the manufacture's recommendation affects the tread contact patch, effectively rendering the additional tread width useless. So a wide tire for looks, throw a 315 on there but don't expect it to function any better than a 275/285 on a 8.5" wheel. Being you are lowered 4/7, I would recommend a 275/45/20 for best fit and function. I also prefer the looks of a properly fitting tire over a sidewall that is stretched or pulled on a rim.

As for tire recommendations, it is very subjective and we need to know what you are looking for in a tire. Ultimate straight line traction? Handling? Ride Comfort? Mileage? M&S? Good in the rain? Noise?

what overall height are you looking for? that affects how wide you can run without rubbing.
you can go wider on a lower aspect ratio without hitting than you can on the same aspect ratio (because it gets taller - i.e., closer to the frame/suspension/steering components)

But I’ve seen this pic online.. when I was shopping for lower profile tires I wanted something wider kinda like on this pic but I couldn’t find any info on the tires on this truck.. they do seem a little wider than the 275s I run and the drop looks to be about a 4-6 same as mine... idk if the owner is on this site tho
