you can buy them yeah. not sure on price i think somewhere between $400-$600.

Steel shafts are smaller in diameter, shorter, have a higher RPM speed and are heavier = more rolling mass. Because of their weight/mass they can only be soo long before you have to go with a 2-piece, or else it will wobble itself to pieces.
Aluminum Drive shafts are Lighter (hollow or filled with foam in the center), Longer (up to 8x inches, and much wider. They handle Torque loads better due to their girth but have a much slower RPM critical speed.

I've actually pushed through the critical speed before on my aluminum DS and it did in fact quit it's vibration and was smooth running. It was not smart but pretty cool to do it. I got the idea because I work on Big marine Diesel engines and they have a Critical speed usually around 28-43 RPM's that you have to push through real fast or else the engine will vibrate itself to death but after that she runs fine.
