Default 99 GMC 4L60E W/B&M Transpack Installation

Howdy guys,

Just want to throw this out there...if any of you have tips, or things to watch out for when I do this.

Im rather new to the 4L60E, but the principles should be the same.

99 Sierra 4X4 5.3 W/4L60E trans,:

I purchased B&M's Transpack kit from Summit (B&M P/N 70365).
Despite Summit's description on Filters...it DOES come with a Filter.
It looks like a high flow unit too. So much for GM's 59.00 filter.

I'm planning on putting in the Street gaskets, spacers and springs.
My co-worker runs this on his 76 Camaro, and its a Firm, Positive shift that seems to "Push" you forward. Plus when I get on it, it'll bark every gear.

Any tips, words of caution, etc?

Is this the B&M shift kit, if it is I have not heard that many good things about them at all. I know that I have read numerous times that these shift kits tend to blow things up in a 4L80 E, and that is something that I know some people will back me up on. I dont mean to burst your bubble but just thought I would let you know.

I would go with a transgo shift kit on that tranny.

I know they're not too popular with the 1st gen Camaro crowd (mostly 350's & 400's).

No, this is not the standard "Shift improver kit"

This is the Full TransPack, complete with springs.

I had the shift improver kit, put in my dad's tahoe..and it didnt make much difference, in addition to making it a "Double shift" feeling.

This is to make the trans, a firm, positive shift, and hopefully avoid the sloppy in and out of gear when at 3/4 throttle.

I appreciate the warning though.
I need to change Filter, Fluid etc, and do an inspection anyway.
If I dig in, and its questionable, then I'll wait and have it built up, with the kit.

I had a TransGo Kit in my 700R4, professionally built, and others I have raced with at Stanton, had transgo in the past. I had alot of slop and it wasn't a positive shift, in comparison to the B&M...again....it all depends on vehicle, who did the work..etc.

I wanted a Fairbanks, but....those are days gone by.

Any specifics on what went wrong with the 4L80's?

Keep in mind, this is a daily driver - not meant for the strip... but just want a snappier shift, and a performance feel.

I have a Transgo in my new tranny, shifts are VERY firm. This is with a stock tune, no torque management removed. Remember, the shift kit is not the only thing that dictates shift firmness. The computer also pulls timing between shifts to save the tranny.

Just an update to my installation....
Ive got about 4K miles with the trans shift kit in.

Its a bit too harsh, and the install shop questioned the longevity of the tranny.
I have developed a come and go 2nd gear slippage.
Not sure if the shift kit accellerated a hidden problem, or if the 89K miles, is taking its toll on the tranny.

I selected the kit Tow/Haul option, and the shop had upgraded my stock plastic 1-2 accumulator piston, with an aftermarket aluminum one.
The tow haul was under strong suggestion from Summit/B&M, for my truck.

1st to 2nd gear is very harsh, and not productive. It seems to bang the driveline quite violently, and rarely barks the tires.
2nd and third are more productive, and have a snappy shift kit feel, with a positive shift. - but...every once in a while now, when it goes to shift into 2nd, it seems to over rev a little bit, then shift.

So, im not sure if I need to play around with the ECM, (torque management or what)
As needaSliverado had said.
OR...im wondering if the shop did a foober with putting in that aluminum slug.

Opinions? suggestions?
