700r4 cracked tail housing????
#1
I took my truck to the track second run I her a boom got a vibration followed by a fire (yup great day) so i put my truck on the trailer and never even looked at it......
today I peeked under it and well the tail shaft housing cracked and slid back about an inch, this was not on take off it was mid tack truck ran a 13.3 if any one wanted to know lol
what are some of the things that can cause it to crack? 87 R10 2wd 700R4

Sounds like it Exploded...
Usually when they go boom, followed by a vibration and then a fire coupled with the fact you said it moved back about 1 inch would indicate a massive failure.

i'm thinking #2 and #4 then?
drive shaft is rust from sitting in the bed of the truck even though it was in a garage for 5 years well this project was parked........

Could bad engine mounts cause this? If the engine is rotating too much due to bad mounts, but the trans tail housing is fixed to the cross-member with the trans mount, wouldn't this cause excessive stress in the tail housing? The tail housing is relatively thin material, coupled with a small diameter, might make it susceptible to breakage. Or perhaps the trans mount can flex enough to accommodate, or perhaps the trans mount would break first? But I would think if this was the cause that it would have happened on a launch, not mid track.
Any pics of the damage?
