I took out the Trans in my '03 a few years ago racing down in Mexico with a guy in a Pontiac G8 GXP. The Trans, the pinion yoke and the drive shaft didn't like the speed and let loose at 120mph!
More to that story but, I replaced that Trans with one from Monster Trans out of Florida. They sent the trans to me and picked up the core all from the comfort of my garage. I installed it with my Circle D (after sending it back for inspection) and made 412 RWHP. I beat on that trans for a couple of years before retiring the truck and buying a newer truck. Sold the tranny to a guy who has it installed and is drifting with it to this day and he is happy as he could be with it.
This was a built trans from Monster, they also have built 6L80 trans so if and when my 6L takes a **** I will be getting one of there trans again.

The beauty of a 6L80 though, is it can handle around 2 times the power of any BUILT 4L60, in stock form. So unless you're making close to 1k I wouldn't worry about running a stock 6L80. Guys in the UAE (tahakum motorsports) have a bunch of 4wd 2014+ trucks running 9's in the 1/4 mile on stock transmissions. TRUCKS running 9's on stock transmissions......

Cool, a stock tranny is a grand less than a built one! That's money in my pocket for other go fast parts!

Spending money I don't have to impress people I don't know. That's me in a nut shell.

Brian at AMP put me in touch with who they use because I've been afraid it wouldn't hold up. Even thought about switching to an 8 speed. The guy said with Sams tune just beat it up until it slips then bring it in for a rebuild. Refresh every couple yrs (for a fraction) if I beat on it with high hp (street). He said he builds for the middle east and has 6 speeds running around with 14-1500 wheel. I didn't ask but probably referring to cars.

That sounds like good advice

I'd love to hear his build list on a high power 6L80, i've looked into it some and if any of you followed or dealt with built 4L60's the build sheet on a 6L is comical. There's a billion parts for a 4L60 and very few for a 6L80.

I think even a stage 2 or 3 6L80 is mostly just a zip kit, which comes in a package that would fit in the palm of your hand lol. And from what I understand, the kit is mostly for parts that tend to wear, not necessarily to increase power handling (except in the way that it prevents wear that would reduce functionality that leads to less power handling) hopefully that makes sense.

I had to build mine, the 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 were pissed off and converter wasn't in the best of shape either. I added clutches, converted a few parts to 6l90 did a conveter flow upgrade, valve body upgrade and got a billet single disk all for about 4K. I'm super impressed with it, pulls much harder and the conveter coupling is 1000% better. It's freaky how fast it will skip shift now, it will go from 6th locked to 2nd unlocked if I stab at the throttle. My tires are gonna hate me now....

Is this in that regular cab?
How long did it go before acting up?

When you say added clutches, do you mean added as in put more in it than stock, or replaced them?
What is a converter flow upgrade?
What valve body upgrade is there, I thought there was only the GM valve body?

Sorry, i'm really curious about all this lol.

And having tire problems (going through them) is a good thing. Usually means everything else is doing it's thing and you're having fun. Get out there and let the smoke out of em, and get another set.. rinse and repeat

There’s a few really good videos on how to tune these when making good power.

Everything I’ve read points to having a good trans tune to make them live at high HP.
