Default 5-speed service

I heard somewhere that you "can" change the fluid in your manual trans. Any idea how to do that? Truck has 91k on it and if someone is not screwing with me I'd like to take a shot at it.

just get a huge friggin allen wrench (i think it's a 17mm) & take the drain plug out. just make sure to check & see that the fill plug will come out first.

also make sure you use the right synchromesh fluid. i believe it was pennzoil what i used last time. i think RP also makes some GM-approved stuff. just don't use straight up gear oil!

also, a lot of guys fill it up, park it sideways on a hill, and add about another 1/2qt to quieten it down a little. works fine so far

i run 5w-30 sythetic motor oil, lot cheaper than gm stuff and works just as good. still shifts like new (not that that is saying much) w/ a lot of abuse.

Ive topped off my fluid about 4-5 times lately after driveshaft swapping/breaking I use the pennzoil synchromesh stuff from autozone, its equivalent to the gm stuff.

i ran sae 30 castrol in mine. I made a tool with a bolt that had a head big enough and welded a nut to it.

that sounds much easier & cheaper than a 17mm allen

Thanks for all the replys. I'm kinda hoping that putting new fluid in will clean up the shifts. 2 - 3 is damn near impossible when at 5K rpm and up.

clean clutch fluid will also really help that. the 'ranger method' is a quick & easy way to do that. no joke - mine was doing the same thing forever & i put clean fluid in a month or so ago & took it out for a drive. went right into 3rd @ about 5700 with no hesitation.

Skip servicing it. Do the T-56 mod. Mine has RP Sychromesh in it, seemed to improve it a little.
