Well i have done this a few times. done it on a concerete drive way and in a gravel driveway. I just did it on a flat bed trailer 2 weeks ago. its not that bad. just get the tranny off the tranny cross member then unbolt it and it should come out. it has been a pita for me to put the transfer case on once the tranny is in because some of the nuts are hard to get to.

I just did a converter swap and pulled my trans this weekend. It will make it alot easier to remove the cross members, its not that hard and will speed things up. If you are having trouble with the t-case bolts just set it up there by hand and thread a few nuts on to it. Then lower the x member so you have easy access to the top ones. I did the converter swap on a lift and it was fairly easy. I did mine on concrete with jack stands and a floor jack. I just lowered it all the way down, slid it off of the jack turned it so it faces the rear ans slid the bellhousing between the rear tire and fender so I wouldn't have to jack the truck up so high.
