Default 4l80e torque converter won't seat, pump gear installed backwards?

Converter Pads are .78" from face of bellhouse, I need another .25" to get to the proper 1.03" measurement. I'm thinking the pump gear might be installed backwards. Which side of gear should face the converter? Gear is installed with face shown in pic towards converter.

Hit the converter with a rubber mallet while spinning it

I did, fucked with it for over an hour, standing on end. A search lead me to this thread, 4L80E pump failure HELP! - Page 2 - Yellow Bullet Forums ,which wasn't clear on the orientation of the gear. I just want to confirm it's right or wrong before I continue wrestling with it. Not real sure on the history of the transmission other than somebody has been inside it.

Can you feel around to see how it's oriented? Pull the pump and open it?

Shined a flashlight down the hole and can see how it is orientated. Seemed to me like if the gear were facing the other way, the TC drive hub would slip thru the ID of the gear and flats would engage it to drive the gear. I don't want to pull the pump if i don't have to,

So it looks improperly installed? Can you take a picture and post it?

If you can stand the trans on end taking out the pump is really easy. Taking the pump apart is equally easy too. The only "hard" part is aligning the halves, but you can do that with a couple long screw clamps from home depot.

But from your first post that slot should face the converter I believe. Like others said sometimes the converter can take persuasion. Personally mine slid right in...

Size: 149.0 KB flat is up tight to bearing, you can see the dots on the gear. I found TH400 rebuild video on YouTube, slightly different pump drive design but going by that video it is backwards.

Sent a message to Transbuillderguy, dots up during assembly. It's in backwards.
