I put an FTI converter in when I swapped my trans. From day one the converter chartered, was told this is normal. After awhile the chatter turned into a whirring/rubbing noise(like brake pads dragging on a rotor). It only makes this noise when in park or neutral, once you put it in gear the noise goes away. Pump pressures are good, I just took the converter back out and sent it back to FTI. I pulled the pan off and there's nothing in the pan, no metal or clutch material. The fluid is still bright red. I'm convinced it was the converter making the noise and something going bad inside of it. A buddy of mine says I have a pump issue I'm asking for other opinions. The transmission shifts great no slipping or anything.

Pretty common thing with multi disc converters! Mine has done it since day one.. It's a tale tale sign of a badass converter! It's just the clutches chattering off of each other. You can take two or three quarts of trans fluid out and put hydraulic tractor fluid in it, or just run straight hydraulic tractor fluid in it. Supposed to quet the clutches down. You sent the converter back because of the noise?

Gotcha! FTI is a good company to deal with, I'm sure they'll get it taken care of. When you put the 80e in, how much space was between the converter mounting pads and the flexplate? What motor are you running?

I believe it was 3/16 it was spec I can't remember what that is though. Running a 6.0 flywheel on 5.3 FTI has been good to me I'm not complaining I'm just trying to make sure I don't need to pull the pump. This noise is only there when in park or neutral and goes away when put in gear. When the truck is in park there's no fluid being put to the converter, and once a gear is selected if ports fluid to the converter am I right ?
