Before gettin the bellhousing bolts tight i always spin the converter. Then tighten the bolts and check the converter one more time. Grease the snout that touches the crank. If you cant spin it with one finger before you pull it to the flexplate, you have a problem.

When you had the pan down did you check and make sure the manual valve was hooked up to the linkage and the right filter was used (all black plastic)? Sometimes builders could have missed that but the pump being damaged is possible during install. If you dont have any fluid coming out the cooler lines you obviously have no pressure which leads to pump.
