Yup and I need to take mine off too.

I talked to the guy that built my transmission for quite a while about why the 60e's fail so much. he said the number one killer seem to be the sun gear shell cracking, 2nd the 2nd gear band burns up, third was overheating sooo you need a damn cooler for a high po app.

Especially if you have a stall.

I am no tranny expert by any means but the operating temp of a 60e is ~165-220 and so if you can keep the fluid down closer to the cooler end then why not. Cooler fluid=lasts longer end of story IMO.

I know Gonzo to be a very informative person on transmissions and is always helpful for everyone that has a ? I think what he is trying to say is that for a close to stock app and without a high stall that the factory cooler is sufficient. I say in most cases this is true. When I was beating on my truck hard with the stock converter in it the trans temps got up to 225 which is too high IMO

Btw Gonzo my transmission has pegged the temp gauge before but that was because I left the engine running and fell asleep and the engine was overheating and thus overheating the trans.

WOW!!!!!

Anyways, to answer some questions. I put the same cooler on that slow01z71 has. The 40,000 gvw version. I took it off and put the stock one back on to take it to the dealer. So, yes I will have a nice big ole thing for the my new tranny.

There is unanimous agreement, however, that an upgraded sun shell is a must-have.
Not that it matters, but I have seen 4 pinion planets break:

And a 5 Gear:

These are pics from the old 4L60 in the RCSB, not the crew.
