Default 4l60e shift linkage

I swapped my th700 for a 4l60e, don't know what year it is though. Can I still use the old shift linkage or do I need a cable? Apparently it is also missing the Neutral Safety Switch, is it only used to prevent starting when it is in gear?

It is cable operated but I will keep my linkage from the TH700, it needs to be shortened though.

From the manual:

"The transmission range (TR) switch is part of the park/neutral position (PNP) and backup lamp switch assembly, which is externally mounted on the transmission manual shaft. The TR switch contains four internal switches that indicate the transmission gear range selector lever position. The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies ignition voltage to each switch circuit. As the gear range selector lever is moved, the state of each switch may change, causing the circuit to open or close. An open circuit or switch indicates a high voltage signal. A closed circuit or switch indicates a low voltage signal. The PCM detects the selected gear range by deciphering the combination of the voltage signals. The PCM compares the actual voltage combination of the switch signals to a TR switch combination chart stored in memory."

Just wondering how I will use it without PCM as I will need to use a stand alone controller (which I don't have yet). I'm using the 4l60e in an '89 c1500 with a self build/programmed EFI so no GM ECU or PCM.

Not necesarilly need to see on the dash which gear I'm in but to have the backup light is mandatory. I could do without the range swith but than I have to figure out how I will replace the backup light function.

Any idea?

As long as the standalone controller does not require input from the range switch you should be good. The truck should already have a backup light switch/neutral safety switch, or if using an aftermarket shifter, many of them will come with switches. Or possibly the standalone controller will have outputs for these??
