Question 4l60e rebuild questions

Lately my transmission seems to be slipping from 2-3, been looking and searching forums for the right answer, but threads seem to lead to a debate over which parts are the best and so forth. My truck is stock 5.3, 4l60e, and 3.42's. I've been talking to some local shops and they want $1100 for a basic rebuild, of course I want to use upgraded parts. My trans now has around 170k miles on it, at the same time I'm wanting to rebuild it and go from 3.42's to 4.10's. I've found some kits on EBay, but I'm uncertain if these kits include everything I will need. So any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend tackling a rebuild by yourself if you don't know what you need. Any of the shops you speak with should be able to source parts themselves to upgrade one, otherwise I wouldn't recommend using them to upgrade the transmission.

If you're seriously planning on doing it yourself, though, make sure to get several rebuild kits. You'll be doing lots of practice!

Also, the eBay rebuild kit talks a lot about Alto Reds and the kit picture seems to be lacking red frictions.

I have no plans on tackling this, I planned on using a local shop, just don't want to be ripped off paying them to install upgraded parts only to find out later on they could've used something better. That's why I'm looking for the parts myself and researching. But to someone that knows very little about transmissions, it can become confusing to say the least.

I would recommend Item #14-700LE or #14-2 from here:

Alto Red Eagle Clutches, Master Kit for 700R4, TH400, 47RE, AODE

That's a complete Red Eagle master rebuilt kit.

I agree with the Red Eagle advice. I put these clutches and Kolene steels in my 80e and it is SOLID!

Save your money and don't buy the altos. The majority of the builders or forum members with a lot of experience say to use High Energy Borg Warners (at least with the 80e). Yes the AE will grip better but they will not last half as long so you will be pulling the trans to replace them. It sounds like you want a trans that wil last long with mild abuse. Buying only alto frictions will not solve the plagued 60e hydraulic circuits.
Get a vette servo, transgo hd2 kit, aluminum accumulator pistons that will yield better apply and help save clutch life. That is about $270 in parts granted they pay for your clutches.

The Borg Warners lasted 6 months in my last 80e. The direct clutch fried like an egg on a hot driveway after a few good launches. The Altos are holding down the fort. They feel strong, even at stock pressure.
