Default 4L60E to 5spd conversion?

hey guys, lately ive really been thinking about converting my truck to a 5spd, although i love how the trans is set up it aggravates me that im not able to tow with it. i came across the idea of swapping out the L60e for a 5spd...only problem is what kind of trans would i need? i had the nv3500 in my old truck with a hays super truck clutch and loved how it was, i googled and some said the nv3500 would bolt up to the ls series motor but id rather not go with the older style nv3500 and older transfer case like my old 90, i know there are 4.8 4x4 5spd trucks but imsure of what trans they use and if my t-case from the L60 would bolt up? if anyone could point me in the right direction itd be greatley appreciated! also how much would a conversion run? i know im gonna be spending some big bucks on a heavy clutch, tob, clutch fork, master n slave cylinder etc etc id just like to hear how much it took some of you guys to convert

thanks

tj

I've literally spent ALL day researching such a thing. The 1500's came with the nv3500, and the HD's came with the nv4500 or ZF S6-650 6-speed. The T-56 swap thread has useful info, as does the ZF swap thread.

Average DD use - NV3500
Moderate towing - NV4500
Super cool, badass - ZF650

^^ IMO

thanks for the links man! i appreciate it, a lot of good information in there fersure! idealy id love to run another nv3500...its just with my driving habits id need some straight cut gears or something to really keep it together...even the race built muncie in my nova doesnt like what i put it through and has been sent out a few times lol. id go nv4500 or zf650 but with 488s and 33's my first gear is pretty short without a granny, n if t56's worked on our trucks with t-cases id probably do that in a heartbeat. btw man nice lookin truck!

If I could abuse the T56, that's the route I'd go. But...that's not the smartest idea. From what I've gathered, the 4500 is the simplest swap. Although all 3 trannies bolt right up to the 5.3, the 4500 requires the least shoehorning (other than the 3500). I had the 4500 in my old '95 3/4 ton Sierra, and it had the stock clutch in it for 10 years. The ZF swap just looks like too much "customization," but that's me.

Here are two more useful links -

Home of Tranzilla - Rockland Standard Gear, Inc.

Manual Transmissions

Someone in the T56 thread said Rockland Gear had made a T56 adapter for our Tcase. You should give them a call if you're looking to go that route.

And the Smart Parts link has any tranny you could ever need at very reasonable prices. I'll be giving them a call when my taxes come in

Thanks for the props! I love this truck, but a stick shift would make me love it even more

haha **** man i was about to mention transzilla's t56 but ya beat me to it, but i definitley might have to give rockland gear a call for that adapter, its pretty tempting lol. but 895 for the nv3500 through smartparts...def a deal, this is makin me want to swap even more...same with the fact one of my buddys works at a gm dealership and gets steals on parts. i know your out in texas, but if ya want i could give ya his works number, if the dealership wont ship em im sure greg would. as for the zf swap, i agree too much work just for it... n yeah and man, def a good lookin truck...and i feel ya completely, like this truck was the first auto ive ever owned...a built 4l60 is cool theres nothin like grabbing some gears and actully feeling/controlling what the trucks doin...i shoulda just swapped trannies n everthing before i sold my 90...ls series motor and a stick, how much better could life get

You could afford to get a long throw like the NV's or ZF, but I've got the damn center console to work with. I'm thinking I'll have to ditch it, but I wouldn't mind getting it out of my way.

I'll be heading back to Ohio in a month actually. I'd love to find some cheap parts! You could price the pedals and all that from gmpartsdirect and compare them if you're looking for the best possible deal. I have a feeling he could get some good deals though

Anything I can do to help. I'd love to have the T56 come through center console, but I doubt it would hold up to the towing I do. I might give Rockland a call tomorrow and see if they make that adapter....Hmmm
