Brent, did you have to replace both the rear and front driveshafts with shorter/longer ones when doing the swap?

Rear ds shortened 1 7/8", front yolks re-used with a new shaft lengthened 1 7/8". The rubber boot on the front of the transfer case set exactly where I marked it on the slip yolk. I think it cost $225 for both.

x10 thanks for sharing, great info.

I also was wondering how much more power is lost thru the tcase though.

I bet its safe to say the range of power robbed from 60e to 80e thru a 4x4 setup is roughly 20-30 horse.

But its hardly an excuse not to do an 80e when your ready to do a trans !

Great write up, and good job on trying your best to do a true apples-to-apples comparison!

So if I swap my 4L60E to a 4L80E, what are some of the things that I need to modify? My truck is a 1500 crew running 3.23 rear with modified 5.3. Thanks for any info.

there are a few ways to do it. you will need a conversion harness, or modify your stock harness, an 80e converter, or a custom converter, either an 80e flexplate or a crank spacer for your 5.3 flexplate, modify your trans crossmember, modify your trans cooler lines, shorten your driveshaft, or use the stocker with a th400 yoke.

if you modify your harness, you will need an 80e segment swap in your pcm to control the trans. if you use a conversion harness, its just plug and play
