You gotta give us more info.

1) What type of truck do you have - motor, mods, gears, etc.?
2) Do you want off the line performance, good gas mileage or both?
3) What is your ratio of freeway/stop-and-go driving?
4) What is your tire diameter?
5) Do you want to race your truck?

My truck is for crusing only... not a daily driver and almost never goes on the highway for any distances. I want killer torque low end power. I'm ordering 4.56 gears w/a Detroit Locker Trutrack this week. The charts show that with the od auto it will cruise at about 2600 at 75 mph. That's a little high but I can live with it given the increased accerlation. Check out www.ringpinion.com to calculate engine speed at any given mph. You just need to know your tire heighth.

I'm thinking of going to 3.73 from 3.42 with Posi. Seems like a good combo for street on 285/70/17's.
Anyone running this gear/wheel?

With a 5-speed, I think that 3.73's will be fine.

Virgil, what's the code say in your glove compartment? i thought i had 3.42's til i looked and i have 3.73's. so just be sure before u wanna change. But from what i hear, the 3.73s in a 5-speed r like 4.10's in an auto. But there is a guy on here that put the 4.10's in his 5-speed and he said it was well worth it b/c of the 3rd gear pull.

When you start putting down a lot of power the lower gear will cause 1st to be worthless. As soon as I go to 1/2 throttle or so I'm on the rev limiter and that is with my 275/55-20's. I have 3.73's and am going to swap in some 3.23's in the next couple of weeks. I had 3.42's in my 95 5speed with a 383 and I went to 2.73's and it was the best mod I had ever done to the truck. First gear actually has a purpose now. The tires on it are 28" tall but my 05' 20" are 31.5".
The 4L60's have a 3.07 1st gear and the late model tr-3450 5 speeds have a 3.82 first. To get the same final drive with the 5 speed as the 4L60 would have with 4.10's you would have to put 3.30. That multiplication factor makes a huge difference with the 1st gear so low. Now if you have a NV3500 your 1st gear is a 4.02:1 and that is just nasty low with some power.

If you cant decide between 3.73s or 4.10s.... go with 3.90s

That's exactly what I was thinking, I would not want to use more than 3 gears in the quarter mile.
