Here's what I gather about the spacer:
The 4L60E flexplate is dished in the center. The 4L80E flexplate is flat.
There are two things that need to line up on the flexplate: first, the teeth need to be set to the right place for the starter to engage, and second, the center hub of the converter needs to seat correctly into the flexplate.
When you use a standard 4L80E converter with the 4L80E flexplate, the spacer needs to go between the crank and the flexplate. This puts the flexplate in the correct position for the starter to engage it (since it's flat), and also puts it in the correct position for the center hub of the converter to seat.
When you use a hybrid 4L80E/4L60E converter, you use the 4L60E flexplate. Since it is dished, it is already in the correct position for the starter teeth to engage, but the dish in the center pulls it away from the center hub of the converter, so the spacer needs to go between the flexplate and converter in this case to give the converter hub something to seat into.
That's what I gather from my reading anyway. Hopefully it makes sense.

the one I was wanting was a Neapco yoke...N3R-3-9161X or its GM equivalent (part unknown)
I just don't know if there are quality issues w/ alot of these shops selling low price yokes...
the Neapco I priced locally was $95...cheapest I found online was $75 plus shipping...
this e-bay one is not Neapco, yet it is $30 plus shipping...
