2004 Sierra 4L60E problems
#1
I have a 2004 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 with 5.3/4L60E. Pretty much stock.
A few months ago while at WOT between my 2-3 shift, it kind of stayed in between the shift in a delayed state.
Now it slips/flare's between my 2-3 shift. It will shift and rev up about 2-300 rpm depending upon my throttle position @ 2500-3000 rpm. I'm also getting a TC shudder sometimes in OD.
The weird thing is, when it is cold outside in the morning (50 degrees or so) it will act almost perfectly normal. However, in the afternoon when I leave work (a 10 hour day and not going anywhere for lunch) and it is 80 degrees outside it shifts terribly. I do not get any TC shudder in the mornings or major shifting issues, but in the afternoon it is a completely different story.
I've seen issues like the TCM needing to be reflashed, the truck needing a transgo shift kit (to patch the problem), and of course a full rebuild (which I would love to stay away from).
I have not pulled the codes yet, but I plan to do that this week.
I just rebuild the transfer case 3 moths ago and added a billet pump rub eliminator and the rear axle a year ago with a Detroit Tru Trac and 4.56's. I would love to be able to do this myself if at all possible.
Thoughts?

I've had a 2-3 shift flare for almost two years now. I put in a can of some of the stop slip fix crap and the flare went away. I have to occasionally add a bit more. You can probably get a lot more life out of yours as well. Hell, I just drove the Yukon from DC to SNJ. 196K miles so far.
Im sure someday I will break down on the beltway and **** a bunch of people off.

Sorry for the late response, but the truck has 196,xxx miles and I am the 3rd owner. I do not know if the trans has ever been messed with before.
I took it to a local transmission shop yesterday afternoon and they said there are 0 codes, but they took it on a test drive and said it needed a full rebuild and would be $2100-$2300.
If I didn't have a toddler and drive him places on the weekends and all, I would just keep putting a band aid on it, but I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with my son.
Monster Transmissions has a trans for $1700 shipped with TC, so I think I might be heading in the direction of a replacement instead of having mine rebuilt.
Are there any other transmission companies that you guys would recommend me looking into for a replacement?
Should I keep the factory stall or? What about getting a 4l65e instead of the 4l60e? Are there any real driving benefits from the 65 vs 60?

The difference in the 60, 65 and 70 tranny's is how much power they can hold. The cases are all the same (I think). So in theory, you could have your 60 built to 70 specs.
There are a ton of places that can build one or ship you one. I have an RPM Level 7.
Their Level 4 rebuild would do you well and is cheaper than what you were quoted. They do very good work.
As for stall, that is personal preference but I would suggest replacing it with a new one if you put a new tranny in. Most places won't warranty the tranny unless you replace the converter. If you want a small stall and budget friendly, look at a TBSS OEM converter (Trailblazer SS).

Yes, stay clear of Monster. Any of the site sponsors can hook you up with what you need as well as numerous other vendors. As mentioned previously I would also use a new torque converter with the new trans.
