Default '00 4L60E Stays Cold

I'm on my 2nd mechanical 2 5/8" Autometer trans temp gauge because I couldn't believe the first one as it took forever to come off the pin warming up. Even when it did the trans won't get any warmer than 160 deg.

Talked to the guy at the shop and he says new gauge function was checked using shop light for heat and it works fine.

I replaced the factory cooler with the Dearle 40k gvw , installed the Dearle 2+ qt. deep pan with cooling tubes. I'm thinking now I should install the Dearle 180 thermostat kit to help with warm up??

I'm running a Circle D 278 mm 3200 lockup converter, transgo kit Sonax billet servos in both holes and I tow a 8 x 12 tandem axle enclosed bike trailer. 4.56 gears 34" tires and 180 deg thermostat in the motor. Motor runs 195 year round. New 34" radiator and stock clutch fan.

I can't do anything to make the trans any warmer than 150-160, which is a good thing of sorts, but I'm thinking the Dearle thermostat is the answer that'll get it closer to normal operating temperature?

Appreciate the feedback and suggestions.

Thanks, V1

My old built 65e stayed under 165 all the time. My current 80e is the same, both have 2800 PI Converters and 40k trucool.

Interesting. I'm sure the trans has a minimum/optimum operating temperature. I'm thinking if I could get it to cycle in and out of 180 degrees with the thermostat that would help it. At this rate here in the mid-atlantic winters it may never warm up at all lol.

I ordered the thermostat. Probably a little overdone in the cooling category with the 40k gvw and the 2+ qt. pan with cooling tubes..

From my research 160-170 is optimal.

I would agree that 160-180ish is just fine.

Completely different platform here but my 2000 GP GTP has the factory cooler still and even on very long road trips in the summer I rarely see past 175º. But if I doing some tuning and what not, I've seen 180º+ once or twice but then it drops right back down.

Even on those tranny fluid charts, 160-190º is roughly 75k fluid life and anything over 200º+ is under 50k or so.

My 60e with a billet Yank SC3000 and a Tru Kool 40k ran at 135 degrees constantly. Even when beating on it at the track, never went above 150.

I think my trans is usually between 140-160 with factory trans cooler. Got up to about 190 or so when towing a car and trailer over some long grades, but would come back down shortly after.
