whats it take to run E85
#11
I've been running it on my 8.1 for about 4 months or more now. The two must's are larger injectors and ability to adjust fuel, either injector time or PSI like I do. Works great, absolutely no knock retard, quite, smooth as glass idle, cooler A/C. I got about 20 lbs.ft. from idle to redline at all throttle postitions. I love it.
I had already installed Marine 8.1 injectors and reduced fuel PSI with the factory regulator until the long term fuel trim was about -5%. When I found E85 for sale local I just pulled in and filled up. The PCM recallibrated itself quickly. Within 20 miles of various driving I could go WOT with improved power. I adjusted to PSI up a bit to split the difference in fuel trims between E85 and Gas. They are at +15 on E85 now.
Fuel efficiency takes about a 20 drop. I went from 9.5 city to 7 (7,000 lbs. 4x4 2500HD). I've got 12 on the hwy with it though still heavy footin.

From what I have read into the conversions you'll need about 35% more injector. If you would have needed 96's, you'll likely need 130+ to make up for it. Since E85 uses Ethanol, it is not very corrosive unlike Methanol which is used is most systems running on just alcahol. Are you considering maybe a Big Stuff with dual fueling?

I've been running E85 for about 2 months now w/ no problems. My truck already has a alcohol composition sensor on it though. I have the Radix supplied fuel pump and Ford SVT 60#. Once the pcm reconized the fuel. It switched over and fuel trims +/- 5%. No tuning needed on top of the original PCM4Less tune. Saves me $$$$ premium is $3.09 and I can find E85 for $2.49 The 3-4 hmpg I loose is worth it

It would be nice if the 06's still have the fuel composition sensor. Mine just guess's how much E85 is in the tank, it's pretty much never correct. I can run 33º of timing in the colder weather though with E85.

Good question.
My flex-fuel tahoe's sensor works pretty well. For a while, I got into a habit of scanning the ethanol % before and after filling up. It would adjust very quickly. It became apparent that the 'cheap' gas stations used a higher ethanol percentage than better stations. At a cheap station, it would adjust stoich from 14.7:1 down to 13.9:1 at the cheap station. Fuel economy would drop 5% at the same time.
