Depends how crazy you want to get with it... but if its a mild build you cant get much better manners than the LS9 cam. I think you will find most on here will suggest you delete the VVT. If you play to push it the VVT parts tend to be weaker.

I don't think he will break parts, I just think there is a reason all of the 'performance' engines from GM don't have VVT.

I personally love the idea of VVT and have seen great results with it. If it were my truck I would most likely try to keep it mild and keep the VVT, or go LS9.

VVT also makes it much more challenging to tune correctly with a custom cam. Not that it can't be done... that's far from the truth, but I think there are very few who have really mastered it.

most fear new things. which is why most tell people to remove it.

Yup... I agree with that too.

At the same time, if he wants to spin really high RPM's and make a lot of power with very stiff valve springs, is the cam phaser designed to take that kind of abuse? That is a real question, I'm not being a wise ***... I legitimately want to know.

I just have a hard time believing its a coincidence that the LS3 and up don't have VVT. GM has some pretty intelligent engineers on their side, sure we modify to our preferences, but there is a lot of science that goes into what they build for the masses.

I have ls9 cam with boost, and know others with same setup/turbo/engine with vvt and there is a clear 40-50 hp difference with the ls9 cam (more power). Its setup for forced induction and the cost savings you will have vs a custom vvt is at least $400. I cannot see why anyone would use a vvt with boost unless it was not an option, which in your case it is.
The ls9 cam is not lopey, still oem/gm and IMO is perfect for a boosted 6.0 or 6.2. Make sure you get correct springs, no DOD ..etc...

My 2cents....

a stock vvt cam isn't the greatest thing for boost. it's ment for torque and mpg. not power. with the right phaser tables you can make the turbo come in a lot sooner and hold out longer in the rpm band.
