Vortechs can make killer power. A lot of guy use them on their Mustangs and they make very good power. The only problem with them that I can really see on our trucks is the way that the filter sits over the drivers side header. You can modify that, some guys have done it on this site with a ProCharger kit. I would say go for it

Which trim level a,b,r (older trims),s,t (current trims)? How are the bearings (leak oil, loose)? A bearing rebuild is about $600. Brand new head units $2000plus. Does that include any other parts for your application? (Little bit of a task if you're going to fab everything) Do you need to smog it? (I think only the V2SQ has a CARB# for your truck and for race I would go for a V1T or larger)
Sooooooo for a short answer...IMO $500 is a good price for a good condition used V1S if you can use it. Vortech is a respected brand and industry pioneer. I won't get into the centrifical vs roots vs screw vs turbo spiral of death arguments.

My Vortech puts 500 horses to the ground on my 5.3L. BTW the filter sits in the stock location to the passenger side of the radiator up front not on the drivers side.... Driveability on a daily basis is excellent... Stock pulley put out 380 RWHP, 3.12" pulley put out 410 RWHP with no motor mods....
