Default Trick Turbo guys

What oil do you run? I run 10w/40 synthetic -diesal blend which works great but I have a problem now.

Now that it is single digit temps at night here the oil pressure cold is 60-65psi at idle and hit's almost 80psi cruising till it gets up to temp. The oil is pushing out the turbo seals and pouring smoke out of the exhaust. When the oil is hot it idles at 40psi and all smoke stops.

I already run a restrictor so I'm thinking the possibility of running 5w-20 oil for these cold months.

What are you guy's running in cold months?

mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic. Its cold here too, LOL. seems to be working fine, no smoke.

I think 10w 40 is way to thick for these motors.

It is the first number that you are concerned with. 10W40 flows like 10 weight at cold temps, and gives the same protection as 40 weight at operating and higher temps. I think most people use 5W30, but if you insist on 40W, go with 5W40. I tried Mobil 1 0W30 once, but I don't think that it is necessary above maybe -15 degrees F.

Go with a 5 or 0-30 oil. YOu might have to let the truck get to operating temp before driving down the road. Other wise you might smoke the turbo.
The turbo already has a small resistor in the body, but your right the oil is just to thick@psi to flow and get away from the turbo.
Hot oil will flow faster then cold oil.

You could try the 5-40 Shell Rotella synthetic. I like to run the diesel oil to combat fuel dilution. Esp. if you are running AFR's is the 10.5-11:1 range at high boost on a stock motor.

Thiner oil will help, but I would have to guess that most of the problem stems from the way you did your oil drain into the bottom of the front of the pan. It's having a hard time "pushing" the oil up that little bit to get it out of the hose and into the pan when it so cold and thick.

I use 5w synthetic.

I changed my oil filter last month and it was different from what I normally use, it fit so i used it. After that change, now my oil pressure goes to 70psi during wot, used to be a little less, maybe a different oil filter will restrict some flow.

btw, we need to line our trucks up against each other someday! heheh

well, I was running pressures like that when I had mine (can't really remember what it feels/looks like now tho) so I'm gonna want u to data log it when u tune mine next week! I was runnig 5W30 Mobil 1...all the engineering logs for the industry give it the best ratings...I know engineers are like economists, but in this case they are backed up with some actual test data instead of guestimates....

I've been on the oil forums a bit and Redline seems to be a favorite to combat higher bearing loads, ala' FI. Mobil1 rates well as does Amsoil 2000(I think that's what it's called)
