towing with STS, Jerry, you here?
#42
I just saw this thread and thought Ided give you my findings. I have had an STS on my 2500 HD 6.0l truck for a little over a year now. I have about 25k miles with the turbo. I run 5 lbs when towing and 10 lbs unloaded. I have 44 lb injectors and a meth kit that kicks on at 4 lbs. I also have a Nelson tune and 4.56 gears on 35 inch tires. I got the kit Specifically for towing. I tow up BIG grades all of the time where I hold full boost for 2 to 3 min at times. I see 1600 EGT at Full boost only and 1450 to 1500 otherwise. My AFR while towing is 11.9 : 1 on a wideband. I just did a full service and found everything to seem fine.
The plugs, tr6's gapped at .040, looked perfect. They were light tan on the center and greyish over the top. I did a compresion check which they were all within 5 psi of eachother. It also just passed smog in CA so I assume the cats are good.
I may be the lucky one but it seems to be holding up great.
Oh by the way, I tow a 12,000 lb toy hauler. The actual loaded weight is 11, 697. I got this at a public scale. It vary's though depending on the gear I bring.

Yes it does. I guess I could let off a little pulling the big grades but thats what I got the turbo for!!!!
I think its been said a million times but " Its all in the tune". Allen Nelson and I went through about 12 tunes before it was where we liked it. He once told me that the 8.1 l turbos he has tuned are running 1600 EGT under normal driving conditions.
Also I forgot to mention I pull my EGT's about 1" from the head on the #7 exhaust manifold.

sweet, thanks for the info JOHN1L40, One question, if your A/F is 11.9:1, are you running in PE mode? you must right? I think I'll have to get Allen to give me a "Towing tune"

Yes it was in PE mode. The 11.9 A\F is under the extreme full boost BIG hill pull. I just wanted to make sure the extra weight and conditions were not leaning me out any. I would talk to Allen about it. He did my tune with towing as the main priority from day one.
Gas milage, you had to go there!! I seem to be getting 10-12 mpg towing on highway. If Im hitting the mountains I get about 8. I also have a 1 gallon water\meth tank tank. This last's a long time during regular towing. But when I hit the hills I have to fill up for the return trip.
If I would have known I was going to tow this much when I purchased my truck I would have gone Diesel. As it turns out my truck is way more fun and actually out pulls the smokers up grades. My racing buddy has a new Ford Diesel with a Banks tuner and exhaust. His trailer is smaller than mine, just by a little. I pull away from him going up long grades. But he gets 20 mpg!!!
