Default STS turbo installed and awesome.. but have moisture problems.

I keep running into moisture problems. I live in Wa. state and yea it's rainy and wet here all the time. I have this damn moisture problem that keeps getting my MAF wet. I have tried the snorkle thing up into the wheel well, but that just got my air filter with its prefilter soaked. I have 35" tires and a 6" lift. No matter how far up into the wheel well I get the filter, I pull it down to look at and it is wet. I'm not mudding or anything. Just freaking rain and water all over the roads. When it is dry out, the truck and turbo runs awesome! Get a drop of water on the MAF and poof, crappy running boost. Runs fine normal though, just cannot boost with the maf wet. I relocated the Air filter to the middle of the truck and coverd it with a shroud of plastic. I am just not sure if the intercooler is forming condensation and the water is flowing from there to the MAF... Anyone ever run into this problem? I solve this stupid water problem and this truck is insane!

Welcome to the forum And nice truck

What's probable happening, it moister is building up in the intercooler and then you boost, there is enough air flow to blow it up into the MAF. I had this happen once or twice. I drilled a small hole about 1/16 or 3/32 in the lowest point in the intercooler right before the up pipe where the water would collect and that allows the boost to blow the water out there instead for forcing it up and though the MAF. Might give it a try.

Speed density tune. It uses a 2 bar map sensor and you can get rid of your MAF. Search this forced induction section for more on this. If your as happy w/ yours as i am. You might consider cutting thu to the bed. I have seen it done. Good luck and Welcome!

On my Dodge, I relocated the air filter up real high between the bed and the 1/4 panel. Dry as a bone now. I live in Joisey and we get plenty of rain/snow/ice.

I had a problem with the condensation gettiing into the vac reference lines to the wg and boost controller and freezing up.

I installed a oil separator from Jeg's and bought a normally open full duty 12vdc selenoid valve. As soon as on turn the key on, the valve closes and all is normal. As soon as I turn the truck off, the valve opens and drains all the water.

damn, dried it all out and boxed up the air cleaner then went out on a run.. It got wet and fried the MAF. Now no matter how well I dry out the maf and pipes, the computer is haywire. Acts like the MAF is wet only now it is totally dry. Figures, now I gotta drop down 100bucks on a MAF... Anyone know how much it is to get a tune and a 2bar map setup going? I am about ready to pipe the air cleaner back up into the engine compartment.

You may have a damaged MAF wire. Those things are so freakin sensitive and flimsy as well. Every time I cleaned mine I was thinking I was going to damage something just because the wires looked so frail.
Maybe someone can pipe up here and tell you how to test the MAF, you will never be able to tell unless your driving under load otherwise. Then it will buck and hesitate like it's wet.

thats exactly what it is doing when I tried to get into boost to get some tuning readings. Buck and hesitate like it was reading poorly.. Ticks me off, I am sick of the water in the system. I guess I'll look into an oil seperator or 2barmap and tuning.

I tucked my air cleaner with the snorkel way up into the bed/quarter panel too, but it didnt make any difference on my setup. It got wet anyways, I cleared the pipes of water, then dried the MAF and for kicks took down the air cleaner and it was wet. Drips of water were all along the top of the fender well. So either condensation or splash somehow gets up inside there and washed my air cleaner so that was not going to work. The fuel tank under my truck has a large sheet metal pan around it. So I bent one side down and tucked my air cleaner in there and then bent the metal back up. then covered the whole area in hard plastic to prevent anything from getting in there. I have since checked and it is dry now. I think the water is getting sucked into the drain holes they told me to pop on the bottom of the intercooler and any other low parts of the pipes. the area beneath the intercooler is soaked after driving in the rain, so I think that is where the water is getting sucked in. Under vacuum it's probly sucking in the vapor and water drops. So I plugged those up, now I need to wait till tomorrow and drop 100bucks on another MAF that is waiting to fry from water.. Ugh..
