STS Rear intercooler
#1
Has any one tried mounting a intercooler in the rear (behind the axle, and remove the spare) and then just run the piping back up front.Just mount it slanted at an angle to catch air when driving down the highway, to keep air flowing couldnt you just use some ele fans. i know there would be a problem with rocks and stuff and granted you stay out of mud puddles, but you could make a shroud with expanded metal to keep big stuff out. Im just wondering if this would be logical, cause i have a couple intercoolers off dodges and some fords. I tried searching but didnt find anything (too many pages and posts)
If anyone has any input please let me know
Thanks

I did something similar, although it is mounted forward of the turbo. I bought a "frame mount" intercooler used from a guy on this forum that replaces the pipe directly aft of the pipe that bends around the frame mount. He was using it for the same application as me, crew cab with an STS. With just the intercooler my IAT's dropped 50 degrees and with a scoop that I made to draw air up and through from the bottom I picked up another 25 degrees of cooling. Front mounts are going to see more air, but I have a HUGE alky tank that sits where the airbox used to and most of the store bought front mounts route the pipes there. When I get some free time, which is scarce, I am going to fabricate my own front mount, and probably keep my rear mount too. I'll just route my charge and return pipes differently.

STS sells a PWR barrel a/w i/c that does not increase your piping. You just replace one of the pipes under the truck with the barrel pipe and install the heat exchanger in the front (or wherever you want).

Unless I do add a front mount I/C later, there is no increase in piping with my set-up. Like I said earlier, my frame mount just replaces one section of pipe under the passenger side rear door. If you get lucky and find one that will fit length wise, then it will be a simple process. It took all of 10 minutes and I was done with the install, however I did fabricate my own scoop which took a little doing. Even without a scoop or fans and the I/C mounted parallel with the ground it will still offer some cooling benefit. But the STS bullet set-up looks VERY sharp too!!
