Default STS oil return issues

As you all know the STS kit comes with a new oil fill cap that's "tapped" (if you consider 2 threads tapped), so a brass fitting with thread into it. My kit came with the brass elbow barely threaded into the plastic. So naturally it leaked. I put some teflon on it and threaded it in as far as reasonable with what was left of the plastic threads. Well it still kinda leaks and its annoying, because it slowly drips onto the exhaust manifold and it smokes terrible when it burns off.

Does anyone else have this issue? What did you do to fix it? I hate this design, and I'm thinking of going with an overpriced billet cap in an effort to get some decent threads. Any ideas?

Is the elbow just not threaded into the cap very far? If that is the case, then just get a 1/4 pipe tap and cut the threads deeper and it will screw in further. I have never had any issues with mine leaking at all. My brass elbow is screw pretty much all the way into the cap.

No, mines screwed in all the way, even with teflon it leaks. I pulled the elbow out, and the threads look straight up nasty. There's only 2 threads and of course its plastic, so how durable can they be. I was thinking using a brass bushing on the elbow, which will step up the size, and then thread it into the "meatier" part the plastic cap.

I'm better off just drilling and taping the valve cover though at that point.

Maybe you can get it all clean and use some epoxy to help seal?

Yeah, JB Weld is an option, but it still doesn't change the fact that this is a stupid design.

Hey... I wasn't going for JB Weld now... LOL just some regular two part epoxy. Of course the JB is nice and gray and can be molded into an interesting shape while you're at it...lol

Mine has never leaked but the fitting it a little crooked on the cap.
You can but a new cap at most auto parts storesand drill and tap it.
Maybe it was just tapped too deep and the tapered threads never really seat to each other.
It would be nice if there was lets say an aluminum cap to replace the stocker with the return line on.

Cool

I agree it is a pretty flimsy design. I bought mine used and there was no way I thought it would seal so I called STS. They said they would give me a new one if it leaked. I put some teflon tape on it and screwed the fitting in as far as I dared. Well it leaked a little so I took it apart and cleaned it up. Then I put more teflon tape on the fitting and screwed it in as far as it would go. Well it hasn't leaked or even seeped a drop. I have even taken the hose off a few times so I could remove the cap and so far so good. Not really very confident about it so I hope I don't jinx myself.
