Q&A:Radix pinners
#2
i guess the answer is time.
it's not that at what rpm's it will happen but at how long from being used will my crank pulley start to slip on the crank.
the crank pinning kit is worth doing right away so it will never spin on you at all.
some of the guys on here had a boost loss that drove them nuts trying to find the leak,
only to find out the crank pulley was spinning and not letting the unit make the boost it should.

You can get the pinning kit from Magna, call and ask for the LSx gen III based kit. It is a generic kit that works fine on our trucks. Again, the kit is cheap but you can do it yourself for under $10 including the new crank bolt.

I suggest pinning regardless of boost level, the kit is cheap and easy to install if you have a lift.A pinned crank is cheap insurance against a catastropic engine failure due to loss of the crank pulley.

Persoanlly ... I never had a problem with it. I removed the crank bolt a couple of times and used the same one everytime.
Only thing I did was get a big impact wrench, turn the air up to about 135 and just pound on it until it wouldn't move anymore.

I have used the same bolt a few times as well. Using some loctite and using some muscle to the level of 250 #ft works fine. I recently used a new bolt though as 3 times used seems a little much IMO.
I pinned because I am going to 6250rpm and using a smaller pulley causing more rotational load on the crank pulley. I don't feel that pinning is absolutely necessary for someone who is running the stock magna tune with the stock pulley. It is a nice insurance card for the price.

Same thing happened to me - I called and the guy I talked to (Kevin) sounded surprised that anyone would want a pinning kit unles they were running 700+ hp or something like that. He said they sold some for the Corvettes but that I didn't need one for the truck. I decided to get one for "peace of mind" as he put it, but I am ordering one.
