I had filters on a stock 4.8 and they got soaked with oil and made a mess. That's my experience with filters. On my brother's Chevelle w/5.3 I ran 3/8" hose off the valve covers and put filters on the end of the hose. That setup is working good.

Have you thought about moving them towards the front of the truck(core support area) to help avoid the oil vapor odors?
My truck has the catch can mounted on the firewall and i'm always getting that oil smell in the cab. One of these days I'm going to move it up to the front to see if it can help with the problem.

for the last year i have just ran mine open with no filters or anything. before i had both valve covers vented to a catch can that had a filter on top. but oil never went into the catch can so i got rid of it for more space. only thing i don't like about not running the catch can is that. if i have my AC on it smells really bad in the cab. with my new motor i will be running a enclosed catch can with a check valve. im boosted also.
