yeah you will be fine. it will have power left for sure, but not dangerous. a few of the guys that like to keep low timing really need to try using an egt sensor. will really teach a lot!

i run mine at .030, but have ran .028 as well. may have been in my head, but light throttle seemed to really suffer from the change.

I just bumped it up to lambda 0.786 and 13 deg of timing and will try it out tomorrow. And I'll get some BR7EF's ordered. What gap would you recommend? 0.028" seems common.

I would really like to learn more about egt and its effects on a turbo setup. I know lower timing causes higher egts, but that's about it. I've got a lot of heat under hood on my setup. It makes me wonder if its excessive, and im always conscious of it.

when tuning WOT set your fueling to lambda .78 plus or minus (.02) what ever you feel comfortable with. now on to the timing. you don't want reduce timing so much that your turbo is glowing red. increased timing will reduce egt. once you have reach the limits for your timing and your egts are still excessive more fuel can be added to help cool things.

Figured out that burst knock was pulling some timing in boost, so I disabled it and now I'm getting the timing I'm commanding. But at 13 deg, 0.778 lambda, and 10.5psi I'm still getting detonation in the 4400-4800 RPM range.

It could be false knock.

sounds like false knock. done any changes to the sensitivity of the knock sensors?

It wasn't knocking before I dropped the AFR, but I also upped the boost 1-2psi. Now it does it every time in the 4400-4800 RPM range at WOT. It will also occasionally KR just cruising around <2000 RPM at light-mid throttle (20-30% TP). It's always done this even after going from 87 to 91 octane and removing up to 10* of timing from the problem areas. I concluded this was false knock, but I've never gotten KR at WOT until now. My valvetrain is pretty noisy

Not sure if I have adjusted the knock sensors, if I did all I did was use less sensitive settings from another stock tune, maybe from a ZO6? Can't remember.

Just looked and my knock sensor settings are 100% stock. I am hesitant to change them mainly because I don't want to conceal real knock. Any suggestions?

Also the stock tables between my truck and any other stock 01/02 truck/f-body/vette tunes are way different. Mine seems to be an outlier, which is strange because I'm pretty sure there are zero physical differences between an '01 and and '02 5.3L truck engine. Maybe GM just came up with better settings? They are basically the complete opposite at low RPM and high RPM, but are similar in between.

You have aftermarket valvetrain, which is noiser. It makes sense that the knock sensors would need to be desensitized some. As I've said before, there is widely varying settings from the factory on LS equipped vehicles. Although, the 5.3 is setup significantly less sensitive than the 6.0 from the factory.
